What Is Thyroid Cancer?
Thyroid cancer occurs when abnormal cells in the thyroid gland begin to grow uncontrollably. Some thyroid cancers grow slowly and may remain confined to the thyroid, while others can grow more aggressively and spread to lymph nodes or other parts of the body.
Types of Thyroid Cancer
The major types include:
1. Papillary Thyroid Cancer
Papillary thyroid cancer is the most common type. It generally grows slowly and often has an excellent prognosis when diagnosed early.
2. Follicular Thyroid Cancer
This type develops from follicular cells of the thyroid. It can spread to distant organs, particularly the lungs or bones, in some cases.
3. Medullary Thyroid Cancer
Medullary thyroid cancer develops from specialized thyroid cells called C cells. Some cases are associated with inherited genetic conditions.
4. Anaplastic Thyroid Cancer
Anaplastic thyroid cancer is rare but aggressive. It can grow rapidly and requires urgent specialist treatment.
Symptoms of Thyroid Cancer
Thyroid cancer may not cause symptoms in its early stages. Possible warning signs include:
A lump or swelling in the neck
A thyroid nodule that increases in size
Persistent hoarseness or voice changes
Difficulty swallowing
Difficulty breathing
Persistent neck or throat discomfort
Swollen lymph nodes in the neck
Unexplained or persistent cough
Many thyroid nodules are benign and do not represent cancer. However, a new or growing neck lump should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.
